Quilting is my therapy!

If you’ve seen our updated About Us page, you’ve seen that I started quilting to do something for ME. This is true, but I REALLY needed it. (Anyone else feel this way?) We had recently adopted a child with cystic fibrosis and he was going through a hard time adjusting to our family, and had also begun doing foster care for a special needs child with cerebral palsy who was non-ambulatory and non-oral. Plus I had two more little ones running around. My husband was still working out of the home at the time, so when I say I needed some time for me, I really, really did. A wise person suggested that I find something to do that did not involve the kids, or doing something to help anyone else, but something that was just for me and my own personal growth. One afternoon, I will never forget, while surrounded by kids and still in my PJ’s I heard an ad on the radio mention the words to do something for you this year…take a quilting class. I remember thinking, here it is, my lightning bolt answer! So, I started taking quilting classes and was immediately hooked…

My oldest daughter, Diana, got me into quilting and now youngest daughter, Sandi, has joined us. On my 70th birthday they picked me up and took me to Shingletown Ca at KOA campground and stayed in cabin for 3 days quilting. Only thing I had to take was sewing machine and clothes. They have said when number ‘80′ comes will do something again.
One of us will call the others up and say be ready on this day and time and we are off on a road trip to one or several quilt shops.
Last May, Diana and I took a trip to NY to see her son that is in the Navy. We took the GPS and would put in an address and that little lady inside took us to the right shop. We ventured to several different states and saw beautiful country besides.
As you can tell we are having a wonderful time as a family and doing something we all love.
    God Bless

It’s taken a few years, but I’ve decided that the flight attendants on every flight have a bit of advise that really matters in life too - if traveling with children, put on your oxygen mask first. If we don’t take care of ourselves, and our spirits, first, we will be no good for anyone else. So, quilting is my “oxygen mask” and finding time for it is a necessity, not an extra, so that I can have the spirit to be there for my family as well.. Happy holidays to all. PS, finished binding a Christmas present at 11:55 Christmas Eve while my husband wrapped packages - perfect timing.

How true, something that is just for me - but the finished product does get spread around. Anyway, I started quilting while living in Kansas. Kansas was a place where I just didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere. I am kind of a free spirit and free thinker and at 50 some years old being told that I had to “pay my dues” again in my career life just didn’t set well. I have always had an interest in sewing - my own and my son’s clothes - and also did craft sewing. Whenever I looked at quilt classes though, they were held during the day and I worked. In Kansas classes were held in the evenings and on weekends. I was determined to take away something positive for myself from living in Kansas and it was quilting. I have found something that I truly enjoy. It satisifies my sense for order and my need for self-expression. I quilt to relieve tension, and can loose myself for hours in my sewing room. It satisfies my “soul.”
